Container shipping major Maersk has launched the construction of its 16,200 TEU dual-fuel containerships that can run on green methanol. Namely, South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries hosted a steel-cutting ceremony for what is believed to be the first vessel from the series on November 28, 2022, based on a social media update from Maersk. The steel-cutting ceremony was attended by the representatives from HHI, Maersk and ABS, which will be in charge of classing the vessel. Maersk has a total of 19 methanol-powered container carriers on order at Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. These include six vessels with a nominal capacity of 17,000 TEU ordered last October, twelve 16,000 TEU boxships and one feeder ordered in 2021. The dual-fuel vessels will be capable of burning methanol as well as conventional low sulphur fuel. That being said, the ships will require approximately 750.000 tonnes of green methanol. The container shipping heavyweight said that when all 19 vessels on order are deployed and have replaced older vessels, they will generate annual CO2 emissions savings of around 2.3 million tonnes.

Pacific International Lines (PIL) has enhanced its Gulf China Service (GCS) to improve connectivity to key markets in the Middle East. The service will now see the addition of Hamad Port in Qatar to the existing calls to Jebel Ali in Dubai and Dammam in Saudi Arabia. In addition, the enhanced service will call Singapore on the West bound route from China to Middle East. These Changes will be effective starting 9 January 2023 from Shanghai, served by the current consortium of seven vessels with an upgraded average effective capacity of 4000–5200 TEU. The ports of call for the further enhanced GCS service are: Shanghai – Ningbo- Nansha – Shekou – Singapore – Jebel Ali – Dammam – Hamad – Singapore – Shanghai. In October, the Singaporean company introduced the PIL Intermodal Services, offering train, truck, and barge services to complement its container shipping services.The new Intermodal Services are available across its existing network in Intra-Asia, Africa, Middle East, Latin America and Oceania.

Chinese shipbuilding conglomerate China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) is rounding off 2022 with the delivery of 209 ships. Over a third of vessels completed and delivered this year by the group’s shipyards were dual-fuel ships (31.6%), while mid-to-high-end ships accounted for over half of vessel deliveries, standing at 56.8 %, the shipbuilding heavyweight said. Some of the key ship construction milestones this year include the deliveries of four 24,000 TEU ultra-large containerships by the group’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) and Jiangnan Shipbuilding (Group). These ships are the world’s largest containerships based on their capacity. The vessels feature some of the most innovative and eco-friendly technologies available on the market including bulbous bows, large-diameter propellers, and energy-saving ducts to improve their efficiency and lower energy consumption as well as air lubrication systems.

近日，由中远海运制造的LNG罐式集装箱首航加拿大。本次载运的LNG罐式集装箱是由中远海运（青岛）有限公司与交控物流集团合资创办的连云港中远海运特种装备制造有限公司制造，并由中远海运货运承接其海运、陆运、报关等全供应链服务。船舶在青岛港完成空箱装船后，将前往加拿大温哥华港进行液体装罐，再通过海运进口直接交付至国内LNG终端用户。LNG罐式集装箱具备储运一体的特点，可以对调峰储备起到有效的补充作用。通过提供LNG存储和运输的灵活解决方案，它还能降低终端用户整体的运营成本。

COSCO SHIPPING has provided LNG tank containers for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) import from Canada. The containers were manufactured by Lianyungang COSCO SHIPPING Special Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd.-a joint venture established by COSCO SHIPPING (Qingdao) Co., Ltd. and Lianyungang Traffic Control Logistics Group. COSCO SHIPPING Freight provided supply chain services including shipping, land transportation and customs clearance. A first vessel loaded with empty tank containers at Qingdao Port set sail to the Port of Vancouver, Canada for container filling, and then directly delivered the imported LNG to domestic end-users via ocean shipping. Featuring integrated energy storage and transportation, LNG tank containers supplement the energy reserve for peak shaving, and provide flexible solutions to LNG storage and transportation for end-users, reducing the overall operating costs.
