Methanex Corporation and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) report that the dual-fuel vessel Cajun Sun has successfully completed the first-ever net-zero voyage fueled by bio-methanol. The Cajun Sun, operated by Methanex’s subsidiary Waterfront Shipping and chartered from MOL, departed from Geismar, La., on January 17 and arrived in Antwerp, Belgium on February 4. By blending ISCC-certified bio-methanol that has negative carbon intensity with natural gas-based methanol, net-zero greenhouse gas emissions on a lifecycle basis were achieved for the 18-day trans-Atlantic voyage, reports Methanex. Cajun Sun and its MOL sister ships Taranaki Sun and Manchac Sun were among the first vessels built with MAN B&W ME-LGI two-stroke methanol dual-fuel engines.

Evergreen Line, HMM, Maersk, the Offen Group, ONE (Ocean Network Express), Seaspan as well as Lloyd’s Register are joining forces with Safetytech Accelerator to find and advance technology innovations from across maritime and other industrial sectors to reduce the incidence and impact of cargo fires or cargo loss overboard.The Safetytech Accelerator Cargo Fire & Loss Innovation Initiative (CFLII) is a collaborative technology acceleration program that will help tackle the issue through shaping joint requirements, identifying technology solutions, undertaking carefully designed trials and developing best practices and recommendations. The Initiative has a broad scope encompassing three significant topics of concern. 

*The first relates to onboard cargo control, including whether cargo has been properly, loaded, secured and monitored during transit. 

*The second area covers the ability to detect fire onboard and stop its spread through effective onboard response, particularly on large container ships and car-carriers. 

*The third relates to the challenges created by the increasing scale of vessels.

Bloom Energy has revealed that, in the first major marine deployment, its fuel cells demonstrated a significant increase in electrical efficiency. The 150kW solid oxide fuel cell platform provided auxiliary power to the luxury cruise ship called MSC World Europa while in port using liquefied natural gas (LNG). The ship was docked in Qatar in November and December for the 2022 World Cup. Bloom Energy said that the Bloom Energy Server™ demonstrated 60% electrical efficiency while the ship was in port, a significant improvement over existing high-efficiency power systems, as well as a reduction of carbon emissions by 30% with no methane slippage. While the MSC installation was geared towards proving the efficacy of Bloom system’s in-port operations, the fuel cells also achieved full power output during the vessel’s maiden voyage between Saint-Nazaire, France, and Qatar while in the Mediterranean Sea.

A new mega-shipyard group has risen in Singapore after the long-awaited merger between Sembcorp Marine (Sembmarine) and Keppel Offshore & Marine reached a successful conclusion. The SGD 4.5bn ($3.34bn) deal that saw Sembmarine buy Keppel O&M closed on 28 February, the company has now revealed. The merger has turned the two competitors into a global powerhouse group for the ship repair, oil, gas and renewable energies industries. The combined company has 300 hectares of shipyard space in Singapore and 23,000 employees. Its orderbook comprises of more than 40 projects with a total value of $18bn. It will immediately conduct a strategic review to maximise synergies between the two shipyard groups.
