Three shipping companies announce trials of SpaceX’s Starlink

Columbia Shipmanagement(CSM) , container ship giant Costamare, and tanker firm Enesel are testing SpaceX’s Starlink satellite Internet service. CSM this month announced it is conducting a trial of Starlink’s satellite Internet service on a number of vessels. CSM said Starlink can facilitate remote monitoring of vessel performance and maintenance needs, allowing for proactive maintenance scheduling and reducing the risk of unplanned downtime. Columbia Group CEO, Mark O’Neil said: "Starlink has the potential to revolutionize the maritime industry by providing reliable and affordable internet connectivity to ships, even in the most remote parts of the world.” Container ship giant Costamare is reportedly trialing Starlink on a number of its vessels. During the trial, the company will assess how it may be able to benefit from greater access to data and online services. Enesel last month began a trial to use Starlink on the crude oil tanker MT Kanaris 21.

Thirteen Filipino seafarers have made it home after more than five months aboard an abandoned livestock carrier ship, the Yangtze Harmony, thanks to the intervention of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF). The ship’s owners abandoned the vessel and its crew after the ship was arrested in October 2022 in Singapore over an unpaid fuel bill, stopping paying the entire crew. By April, the crew were owed a massive USD $429,972. However, what the ITF’s inspectors didn’t expect, however, was the company also abandoned the Yangtze Fortune (IMO 9336282) which was seized by the Australian Federal Court at Portland, Victoria over the owner’s refusal to make urgent repairs. The ITF’s months of advocacy would recover USD $1 million in backpay owed to the crew, as well as flights home and the feeling of freedom for every one of the 43 thankful seafarers.

Wärtsilä will supply a new maritime educational centre with a simulation training lab equipped with the most sophisticated technology available. The centre, located on the island of Donsö in Sweden, has been developed by Swedish shipping company Furetank. It will provide state-of-the-art simulation services, allowing crews to receive training, assessment, and certification. Wärtsilä has designed the simulation lab to address the very latest developments in operational equipment and systems, the facility can accommodate 14 students at one time. Physical simulation bridges are combined with virtual, augmented, and mixed reality applications. Together, they create highly realistic learning environments for navigation, manoeuvring, docking, cargo handling and safety procedures. The system also replicates and teaches the correct way to utilise new ship technology, such as shore power connections or LNG/PBG bunkering. The centre will be operational from summer 2023.
